It's ultrasharp at every setting, covers a great zoom range, focuses fast and focuses so close that you may no longer need a macro lens! It focuses to arm's length, even at 500mm, which lets this lens replace traditional 70-200mm lenses.
Compared to the older Canon 100mm f/2.8 USM lens it replaces, the L lens is undoubtedly a bit sharper at f/2.8, but by f/5.6 you will be hard pressed to find any noticeable differences.
